Update: See our transition activities below!
Here in school, we are so excited to meet our new Year 2 children in September and begin your final year at Berry Brow School. This is a very important year as not only will you learn SO much, you will also become our super, sensible role models for the rest of our children in school. We are really looking forward to an exciting year of learning ahead with our otters and rabbits.
It has been a different year for our lovely Year 1 children this year which means our transition will also look a little different! We won't be able to say hello in person just yet, as we all need to carry on staying home and keeping safe. We would still love to get to know you though over the coming weeks so keep checking the website for exciting updates!
Come and join us for our 'New to Year 2' meeting via zoom on Tuesday 7th July at 5pm.
You will be in the Otters class with Miss Hancox, have a look at the current Otters page here to see what they have been up to!

Welcome to Hedgehogs with Miss Hancox and Mrs Wormald!
Wow what a great first two weeks we have had in Hedgehogs!! The children have settled in superbly and have all thoroughly enjoyed doing their new got to jobs! The grown ups have been very impressed with their learning in Year 1 and have had lots of fun along the way!
To introduce our new topic: Our school in our community, Year 1 went on an adventure walk around our local area in Berry Brow. We had lots of fun exploring and discussed the human and physical features within our area.
During our got to jobs we have made a Hedgehogs class promise where we came up with our own class rules to keep us safe and happy . The grown ups have been super impressed that all children remembered their capital letters and full stops when writing the class rules! We then made hedgehog hand prints to make our class promise.
In Talk for Writing, we have been learning the story of the Three Little Pigs. We have made a story map to help us with our learning and have created actions to perform the story together. Miss Lonsdale and Mrs Wormald have been AMAZED at how well the children know the story and actions off by heart!! Keep up the good work Hedgehogs!!
We then moved onto retelling the story of the Three little pigs through role play using puppets before having a go at writing the story ourselves. There are definitely some confident little actors / actresses in our class! They did a super job.
WOW....Hedgehogs have blown my socks off in Week 2 with their first spelling test!! Everyone tried their hardest and it was clear that they have all been learning their words at home. 17 children received 8/10 or above!! What an AMAZING achievement!! Keep it up!!! I will be giving everyone extra dojo's for their efforts!
The children are loving their daily mile and often beat the teachers to the finish line!!
Wow we have been busy in week 3!! The children have been very excited about their got to jobs! We have been baking little pig buns linked to our Literacy topic: The three little pigs. They looked scrumptious! We also talked about the ingredients that went into our bun recipe.
In science we have been looking at different materials. Year 1 have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the outdoors to hunt for different things made of wood, plastic, stone and metal.
As part of our topic this term we have also been discussing lots of different jobs within our community and talked about what we would like to be when we grow up. It was great to see such a variety of what the children aspire to do :)
Family Learning Morning
Wow, we have had so much fun in Year 1 for our first family learning morning! Thank you to all the grown ups who came in to join us with our learning. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we all did! :)
In Year 1 our activities were based on the book 'Supertato' by Sue Hendra which is one of our favourite books to read in school for pleasure. We experimented with vegetable printing, we made the character Supertato out of potatoes, we crafted medals and super hero masks and also designed our own super hero characters and board games!
Each week the children will be doing a spelling test on Friday based on the spellings they brought home in the first week. They will be receiving extra dojos for their hard work and so if you could practice these at home with them that would be fantastic.
Hedgehogs will be doing PE on a Thursday and a Friday so they will need a PE kit in school. Depending on the weather, we may do it outside so appropriate footwear is essential.
Don't forget to write your names in all clothing.
Guided reading takes place every day and so please remember your book bags.
If you want to read at home you can also read lots of books online at:
In Autumn 1 we will be learning our numbers up to 20, focusing on addition and subtraction. The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring maths games on Activelearn and Top marks which can be played at home at:
